We visit with Windy in her comfortable treehouse home, high up in a pear tree in the middle of her orchard. On the kitchen table is a neat pile of brightly coloured paper and a mug of pencils.
Q Windy, what is your favourite season?
A [thinks for awhile] Oh, that's really hard. Hmmmm. I guess the fall. The trees in the orchard turn beautiful colours. It's also time to harvest the fruit -- I like to fill up my basket and tip it in the wheelbarrow. Sometimes the pears and apples come down in a windfall, but if they don't, we get to climb up high on ladders to pick them. It's pretty fun.
Q Let's say you were on a desert island, what 5 things would you bring?
A Well...when I've seen pictures of desert islands, there's always a palm tree. So I think there will already be wood on the island...and coconuts to eat, right?
So, then, I would bring:
1. Paper: origami, kraft paper…all kinds.
2. String.
3. Pencils
4. A really good pair of scissors.
5. Old Al, for sure. He's the owl who lives here in my pear tree. He wouldn't mind living in a palm tree. And he might deliver postcards to my friends.
Q What do you like to do on a Sunday morning?
A Usually, I get up early to feed the chickens. On Sundays, the chickens and I sleep in and then they come up to my treehouse for toast and jam. We play — outside, if it's nice out. Then they help me tidy and hang out the washing and after that they head out to do chicken things.
Q Then you work on a craft project?
WINDY: Well, no — on Sundays, after it's all tidy and quiet, I like to look out the window and daydream. That's when I find my ideas. The rest of the week, you are right, I am usually working on something [laughs]
Thank-you for coming over! It was so nice to meet you. Please, take a jar of jam with you! Here... I have some apple-mint jelly. It’s perfect for you.
She’s right it is. —WM
